'American Horror Story: Roanoke' Episode 2 Review
Episode 2 continued the horrifying experiences of main characters Matt and Shelby, as the supernatural occurrences are becoming more frequent. The paranoia the characters are all succumbing to increases the tension and anxiety in each scene, building an atmosphere of uneasiness.
We began to see some of the house's history, as we see Matt have an encounter with two nurses murdering an elderly woman. When Matt and Shelby discover a cellar in their front yard, they find a video tape showing a former resident named Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O'Hare). He is cataloguing his own experiences with the happenings in the house and sheds light on the nurses, telling their murderous history.
Matt and Shelby also have more encounters with the human sacrifices going on in the woods surrounding their property, seeing a man being roasted over a fire wearing a pig's head. The couple is able to direct the police to the site, and are given a police patrol to watch the house 24/7 until the investigation ends.
Another plot featured Matt's sister, Lee, and her struggles with losing her daughter after she begins talking to an "imaginary friend" in the house. The girl's father hears her say that the girl will kill everyone in the house, prompting him to take the girl away. A distraught Lee later brings the girl back to the house, legally kidnapping her. Shelby talks Lee's ex down from pressing charges, and he comes to take her back.
The happenings in the house arereally having a major effect on all of the characters living inside. The supernatural happenings are undeniable, and the mystery of their experiences are really fun to watch unfold. I loved the revelation from Dr. Cunningham, as he gave the audience and main characters some insight as to what could possbly be going on. When Matt and Shelby found the "murder" scipt on their wall, things became very sobering for the pair. I can't wait to see more in terms of the "cult" inhabiting the woods and their motivations for haunting the residents of the house.
My rating: 8 out of 10
