'Zoolander 2' Film Review
Following in the footsteps of comedy film sequels that have come long after the original (Anchorman 2, Dumb & Dumber To), 'Zoolander 2' picks up 15 years after the original film's release in 2001. This poor excuse for a movie wasted an hour and 45 minutes of my life that I will never be able to get back.
At no point did I laugh, chuckle, or even smile while watching this train-wreck. I'm not sure how this movie even got made. It was completely unfunny, stupid, and ridiculous. While I enjoyed 'Zoolander', it surely wasn't anything special. I don't understand why it took 15 years to make a crappy sequel, but sure enough, we got it.
I really don't have a positive thing to say. Though there were tons of celebrity cameos, none of them were funny or inspired. The characters were very flat, idiotic, and one-dimensional. It was almost as if the studio thought "Hey, let's make the dumbest movie ever and see what people think". This was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time.
Deservedly, this movie holds a 23% critic rating and 22% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though even those numbers might be a bit generous. Somehow, 'Zoolander 2' managed to steal almost $29 million domestically.
It's a shame that sequels to comedies are overwhelmingly bad, especially when the first film is so good. What's more disconcerting is the fact that these sequels are coming 10, 15, or sometimes 20 years after the original. I'm not sure why a sequel can't be made within 2-3 years of the original, but if it it's not a good idea at the time, it surely won't be good down the line. Hollywood, please stop killing the memory of comedies by giving us bastardized prequels, sequels, and reboots.
