'Keanu' Film Review

With a film premise centering around two men trying to find a kitten, 'Keanu' was a fun, hilarious movie that kept me laughing throughout.

Comedic masters Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are great. With the success of their sketch show 'Key & Peele' (which ended this year), as well as their stint on 'MadTV', the duo carried their incredible chemistry over to the big screen.

The over-the-top nature of this film fit perfectly within the great comedic moments and perfect timing, as Key & Peele know each other so well from their years working together. The supporting cast, with actors like Will Forte, Method Man, Luis Guzman, and Anna Farris and all of the actors that made up the "17th Street Blips" really added to the outrageous-ness of the movie.

It was a bit weird hearing the two stars cursing and repeatedly using the n-word at first, as they can't get away with that on cable TV, but it really fit within the confines of the story and their characters. I also really enjoyed the action scenes in this movie. For a film like this, it would have been really easy to have the action be ultra-cheesy. However, I thought it was really well-done and impressed me.

And let's talk about how darn cute that kitten was! As a man, I have to admit that he was adorable. I'm not sure if the directors lucked out in just getting really cool shots of the kitten in action, or if there was some kind of training, but it felt like that kitten, aptly named "Keanu", was a character as well. The fact that so many different people were after this cat was hysterical.

While 'Keanu' won't be bringing home any Oscars, it was exactly what it should have been, and did a wonderful job entertaining me. The key to a good comedy is maintaining the laughs throughout the entire film, and 'Keanu' accomplished that, in my opinion. Though Keanu Reeves did lend his voice to the film, I wish he would have appeared in-person.

'Keanu' went on to gross $20.5 million domestically on a $15 million budget and holds a 77% critic rating and 61% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

My rating: 8 out of 10
