'Trainwreck' Review

The aptly named 'Trainwreck' starring Amy Schumer was, to me, a poor film.

As a male who's guilty pleasure movie is 'How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days', romantic comedies are OK in my book. However, 'Trainwreck' was a mess of a film that ran way too long. It just seemed to drag and I found myself just wanting it to be over.

I am not an Amy Schumer fan. Her stand-up comedy act is mainly centered on sex jokes, and the schtick carries over into this film. Her character "Amy" (how inspiried!) is a caricature of her stage presence with the same crude humor wrapped around poor acting. I'm not a prude, but constant sexual humor just isn't my thing.

At no point did I find her character to be believable. She just seemed out of place in a film also featuring non-actors in WWE star John Cena and NBA superstar LeBron James.

The only thing that made this movie bearable was the supporting cast, with actors like Bill Hader , Oscar winner Brie Larson, the chameleon Tilda Swinton, and a lot of small parts from comedic actors like Tim Meadows, Mike Birbiglia, and a host of others including cameos from Marisa Tomei and Daniel Radcliffe.

The film would have been better served with about half an hour less run time. It just felt like there were too many scenes that served no real purpose other than to showcase Amy Schumer's potential movie career.

Checking the box office numbers and ratings, the film did very well. Its domestic theatrical run netted over $110 million and holds an 85% critic rating and a 67% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It wasn't a terrible film, but just wasn't for me.

My rating: 5 out of 10
