'The Secret Life of Pets' Review

My fiance and I took our son and his friend to see 'The Secret Life of Pets' earlier today. After being intrigued by the trailers and marketing materials, I was OK with going to see a family film.

When a dog named Max's owner brings home a new dog named Duke one day, tensions rise as Max is now jealous of having to share owner Katie's affections and his own living space. Max and Duke wind up in some zany hijinx as they are being chased by a group of "flushed pets" (pets that have been discarded by their former owners). Max and Duke need all the help they can get to make it back home and learn to depend on each other along the way.

With voice actors like Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Dana Carvey, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress, Eric Stonestreet and a host of others, 'The Secret Life of Pets' was a fun, cute family film with lots of laughs for viewers of all ages.

I'm sure all pet owners will appreciate this film and begin to wonder just what their furry friends are REALLY up to when they're left alone.

The animation in the film was really good, with landscape scenes looking as close to live action as possible. The character interactions and personalities of individual animals really felt genuine.

Looking at the weekend box office numbers, the film made an estimated $103 million this opening weekend. It also holds a current 76% critic rating and 69% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While this wasn't one of my favorite animated films, I still enjoyed it and had fun watching it.

My rating: 7 out of 10

*There was a new 'Minions' short before the film started that was hilarious. The minions work much better in smaller scenes and shorts like this one.
