'Bates Motel' S04E06 Review
This week's episode of 'Bates Motel' was an interesting look into Norman and Norma's past with Norman's father. We have only been told very little about the man, citing his anger, violence and alcoholism.
In this episode, Norman is continuing treatment at the facility he is in, and during therapy sessions, he begins to remember his father when he was a little boy. Norman is made aware of his split-personality by his doctor, and that the second identity is that of his mother.
Norma, growing ever more paranoid by the information held by Chick about her and Caleb, looks to take drastic measures by killing Chick, but ultimately cannot do so. She finally admits the truth to Alex, and this is a huge step forward for Norma, as she can ease the burden from her shoulders.
This episode focused on healing. Norman appears to be healing from his mental illness when his brother comes to visit. But we are shown the appearance of his alternate personality again at the end of the episode. Norma, tasked with bringing Caleb back for Chick to kill, appears to heal after conversing with Caleb and ultimately not giving him up and admitting everything to Alex. Dylan appears to heal after also talking to Caleb, visiting with Norman and telling Norma he plans on moving to Seattle to be with Emma.
Our characters, though they may seem to be moving in a positive direction in this episode, are surely doomed to revert back to their old ways. Norman is close to coming home from the institution, and who knows how he will be once he's out. I liked this episode a bit more than the past few, it gave us better insight into our characters' psyches.
My rating: 7 out of 10
